This is a Salvatore Puddu “Large Duca” Mother
of Pearl Titanium & Gold Lockback Folder. The blade measures 3 3/8 inches,
the handle measures 4 ½ inches (gold bale excluded), with an overall length of
7 7/8 inches. I am extremely happy as an Italian to be able to offer this knife
by master Italian knifemaker and my very good friend Salvatore Puddu. Salvatore
is one of personal favorite knifemakers. Salvatore makes his creations in his
shop in Quartu Sant’Elena in the province of Cagliari, Sardegna, Italy.
Salvatore is widely known for being one of the best, if not the best,
multi-blade lockback knifemakers in Europe and the World. What most people
don’t know is that all Salvatore’s knives, including single-bladed folders and
even his rarer fixed blades, are all made to the same level of perfection as
his multi-blade knives. He prefers making folders, specifically multi-balded
folders, because of the complexity and the challenge of making a perfect
folding knife with more parts and one or more locking mechanisms. The
tolerances on his knives are amazing and a testament to his machining skills,
and his fit and finish is second to none. He also makes every part of his own
knives, including the blades, handles and handle parts, liners, pins, springs,
bearings, and even the screws. His knives are perfectly finished inside and
out. This specific Puddu knife is one of Salvatore’s earlier pieces. It can be
considered a “vintage” Puddu. The knife was made in 2001 and is one of only two
“Large Duca” folders in this size to ever be made. Both were sold to Italian collectors.
The knife shows all the hallmarks of Salvatore’s work. Wonderful fit and finish…everything
is nicely rounded and contoured and polished. The inside of the knife is as
polished as the outside. The RWL-34 steel blade has been polished to an amazing
mirror finish and features beautiful grind lines. The entire frame of the knife
handle is made of titanium and mother of pearl. The bolsters are titanium with
a brushed finish, while the sculpted and fileworked titanium spacers between
the pearl scales and bolsters are actually held in place by the scales and
bolsters themselves...wonderful construction! The titanium liners are
fileworked in two distinct patterns around their entire perimeter and the
handmade body screws and bale are 18k gold. The steel backspring has been
mirror polished to match the blade and is inset with a mother of pearl inlay on
the lockback release. This is a wonderful knife, and a great and rare example
of Salvatore’s earlier work. A beautiful addition to any collection!
